Its modular sequence design was useful. You could build a set of sequences, and then try them out in different orders just by pressing letters on the computer keyboard. You could change tempos on them independently, allowing a film composer who had just received a new video tape to quickly check that the scene changes would still work.
Somebody mentioned the Audio>MIDI and vice versa. It also had a powerful set of CC transformation and manipulation tools. Remember Transmogrify? You could scale CC and pitchbend data. You could make MIDI selections algorithmically - every other note, every third note, that kind of thing. Even the lowly Power Tracks Pro could pull off much of that. It's just not PT's forte.
