I have a 2009 MBP with the ExpressCard slot. Live setup as follows ...
I use an ADS Pyro 1394a ExpressCard (genuine TI chipset) to go to my Presonus Firestudio Lightpipe interface (FW400).
I use the built-in FW800 port to goto external drives if necessary
