Default Avid HD I/O Issue - Will not Connect With HD Native

Got OSX 10.6.7, HDPT 8.5 .... HD Native PCIe card
on a 2 X 2.4 Quad core Intel Xeon macpro (2011 I think)

2 x HD IO both stay in 'orange ring' mode on powerup and PT loading.
PT gives the ol:
"Unable to Find an Audio Interface attached to the first HD card. Check power and Digilink cables.

Digidesign coreaudio manager shows HD Native, but no periph connected

'N' at PT startup gets to playback engine and the current engine is Pro Tools HD Native

Checked and reseated Digilink cables.
Changed PCI slot of card.

Digitest passed the card, but Audio I/O Firmware shows
----- "Firmware Version in Selected Device" and Updating
ends in errors at 0% done.
Error message is:
Data verification error on flash sector 0

Slot Info tab, in the digi utility, shows it knows something is plugged in but
under Peripheral Name: there is "Firmware Missing"

Tossed Prefs, ran cleanup app, zapped PRAMM.

Reinstalled everything numerous times.

Tried selecting Native in sound prefs and playing itunes.
This resulted in a digi core audio failure and error (in the crash report)
And sound prefs was double checked to not have Native HD selected
as system output until this test.

It seems a firmware issue happened somehow but on both IO's?
How would I go about resetting firmware on the HD IO's?
Could it be core audio drivers?
Could the HD IO's just up an die?

ANY ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated.
