Being significantly quieter than a pro song is normal since your song has not been mastered. My mixes usually peak at -3 to -6 and live around -10. Mastering brings up the volume in a proper manner and adds the final touches to the song as a whole. Squishing the volume to compensate won't sound as well, and probably not even as loud despite the bars being the same.
