Default Re: What do you think of these books?

Hi Gabriel,

well, what can I say, I'm on my second serving. It's that well written, it's that good.
I once bought a book entitled 'how to start and run your own record label', which was good, but it was all veggies and no meat. Redundant phrases from the author and quotes from successful label execs throughout, such as, "oh, it's such hard work - make sure you establish many good relationships - good luck in finding a distributor - you need to setup a good business plan - you will spend most of your time talking to important people on the phone - oh, did I mention it's very hard work - and so on....

"Confessions of a Record Producer" has all the music-biz meat you can gnaw on.

-You want to know what really goes on when you sign a publishing deal?
-Why signing with a major label is like dealing with the devil.
-How much can you expect to make of an indie release with major distribution.
-How do royalties, label advances and recoupment deals really work?
-What to look for in a lawyer, and what they want from you and don't always tell.
-The role of the manager and how he can make or break you.
-What a producer/mixing engineer makes on a major project that sells 'x' amount.

ok, you get the idea. It's all about that and it's f***ing fascinating to read because it's all based on true experiences.

Just 12 pages in and you'll know what I mean by "that good".
