I did have the same thing happen, but after re-starting the computer, it works.
Not sure if this is the solution for everyone, but I heard it has something to do with another app (I think iChat),...

Have you set up "minus one processor"?
Meaning, if you have a 4 processors - set number of RTAS processors to 3.

Depending on what you mean by cheap, I think the Duet is fantastic for it's price. I believe Apogee has a one pre version now called One, which should be even less $, but I have not used it myself.

2- Do we need 2 dongles, or can one just keep the Mbox while the other uses a dongle?
You could simply keep running PT8 LE on the Mbox and get PT9 for the other machine with a dongle.
