Re: After 15 years, need an upgrade

Your system is quite old and technology has moved forward far beyond those times. Perhaps the best way to solve the performance issues would be a new computer and interface. If you are comfortable...

Re: Is there any option to run PT on my 2020 iMac?

In this case, it is probably time to have your customer upgrade the version of Protools to the current version (2020.12). They can try a monthly subscription to ensure it works to their...

Re: So Pro Tools 2020 doesn't work with Big Sur?

One possible solution is to have two bootable drive (one can be external if necessary). On one drive have Big Sur for your Adobe Suite. On the other have Catalina (or any other OS version) to work...

Re: So Pro Tools 2020 doesn't work with Big Sur?

Well, no version of Protools (current or older) is certified to work in Big Sur yet. The official solution is to downgrade your OS (not Protools). Catalina 10.15.7 works well with Protools 2020.12...

Re: Pro Tools 2020.12 M1 Mac Mini

I've read that this issue exist with Big Sur even on an Intel Mac. Therefore the M1 Mac mini is not the cause.

Other than that, thanks for the report. It is good to hear that it is mostly good...

Re: Big Sur on Intel Mac

I've loaded Protools 2020.12 on Big Sur in an Intel Mac. It loads and runs. Unfortunately it was on a lowly 8GB M5 12" MacBook. I did not try any third party plugins. Take that for what it is...

Re: Pro Tools gets smaller after playing a note on MIDI keyboard

The simple solution is to not hit your table (Just kidding). There must be something that bumping the table is doing to your computer. My initial thought is a loose cable or adapter. There might...

Re: PT needs to update to macOS Big Sur...

Was the warning specifically about Protools? I'm on Catalina but have not seen this message for Protools (I'm running PT 2020.12 vanilla). I think I get it sometimes for some mouse driver I have...

Re: Pro Tools 2020 on Mac Pro Mid 2010?

I holding out for the next wave of products from Apple. I'm hearing some rumors about a 14" and a 16" MacBook Pro with new M1x processors with more performance cores and possibly Apple Silicon GPUs....

Re: PT needs to update to macOS Big Sur...

While that may be true, at this moment Protools has not been officially certified to work with Big Sur yet. A few of us have loaded Protools 2020.12 on a drive with Big Sur and for the most part it...

Re: Long absent DUC member looking for new answers

I've taken the other approach. There have been several outages of the iLok servers that rendered all those that use the ilok cloud licensing unable to run Protools. This caused a lot of stress for...

Re: Problem with RAM upgrade

Yeah, I heard that you were not supposed to mix memory capacities also. Perhaps the issue is if you have different capacities in the similar position on each riser (ie. 8 GB on position #1 and 16 Gb...

Re: Frequent spinning pinwheels, freezes, disk errors - worse since 2020.12

There were initial video support issues with Catalina so it depends on the software applications you are using. Final Cut Pro X was working from day one. Protools 2020.11 (I think it was that...

Re: Pro Tools 2020 on Mac Pro Mid 2010?

I have an 8 core (2x4 Nehalem) Mac Pro 4,1 that I flashed to 5,1 but did not do any processor upgrades. I took out the original 6GB RAM and put in 32GB RAM from OWC. I also installed a 500GB SATA...

Re: CPU Spikes and 9173 Errors

i5 is a little underpowered. 8 GB is less than minimum requirements. While Protools will start and handle some audio tracks, the 8 GB RAM is probably choking when using VIs and plugins. You've...

Re: Buy 2020 iMac or wait for 2021 iMac - That is the question

That is what I would do too. I like to have the best options available to me before making the decision. It sounds like you can wait a bit given your primary system is a 7.1 MacPro.

Re: Confused about RAM and M1's

Likewise, I think 1 TB is fine. I work on just a few project at a time and I have enough room on the internal for that, which is amazingly fast. I always black up to external drives. If I...

Re: Confused about RAM and M1's

Good for you. Remember that the RAM is soldered into the board and is not upgradable at a future date (no slots and no swapping RAM sticks), so order the machine with all the RAM from the start. ...

Re: Problem with RAM upgrade

So the lesson learned is that not all RAM is compatible, even from the same manufacturer/reseller. RAM are manufactured in batches and in-between those batches, there can be changes to...

Re: Confused about RAM and M1's

Agreed. While unified memory can get data to and from the processor faster, it does not mean a sample-based VI will use less space to hold it in RAM. Look folks, the M1 is fast when it comes to...

Re: Confused about RAM and M1's

That is what I was implying. With SSDs, samples for VIs can be streamed as needed for most cases. This works for my type of use cases. I can see that if someone was doing an orchestral piece, they...

Re: Confused about RAM and M1's

All sample-based VIs start out stored on a drive. It is just that some can be loaded from a "slower" drive into "faster" RAM for faster throughput. For people using multiple sample-based VIs, this...

Re: Frequent spinning pinwheels, freezes, disk errors - worse since 2020.12

My first reaction is to delete preferences and restart. When you upgraded to Protools 2020.12, did you write over the previous version, or did you delete the previous version and install a fresh...
