Well, I refer to it as a bug because a) I've not heard of another Mac app failing due to a corrupt preferences file and b) I've not heard of another DAW on either platform failing to export audio...

Holy crap... trashing the preferences worked.
I can't BELIEVE there's a bug in a $600 application that it silently fails unless you delete a prefs file. That is SO windows 3.1

Thanks, Dave. You are right, I didn't include that much info. I was frustrated at the fact that everything had worked fine just hours before. Here's more info:

Update: This now happens on all sessions on this computer. And restoring an earlier version of this same session that bounced down last night no longer bounces down. Yikes! What on earth could have...

I fixed it. I had to go under Setup -> playback engine in protools and then choose the interface again from the top menu item which is "Current engine." Once selected, I was able to choose it...

I've read in other threads that using th H4n works fine with PT9. I myself happen be having the same problem with my Saffire Pro 40 though... I can only select Built-in Output under the Hardware...
