Ext USB drive for VI's?

I know you cant use a USB2 drive as your audio recording drive but can you use one just for your VI's and sample libraries? Or maybe just sample libraries?

I thought Apogee ad/da 16x work with anything with an adat port or by using the system specific card in the expansion slot so not sure what you mean? I use mine with a roland daw and a toft atb24. So...
