Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave

Yes all the PCIe switch based performance doubling I've already explained.

YOU WANT ME TO START USING ALL CAPS :-)

Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave

Oh dear we seem to have lost the thread here.

This is a dumb as a rock plain non-switched card. It will directly wire a NVMe M.2 SSD card to 4 x PCIe 2 lanes in a Mac Pro. What you want is a...

Re: Beyond Annoyed

Nice support from Avid, but now PatJo please consider trying out the Pro Tools Ultimate Trial and then seeing if you can rent or buy a copy of Pro Tools Standard (all you need then is the licenses,...

Re: Beyond Annoyed

Have you tried what Avid suggested and used Pro Tools Ultimate Trial to save the sessions. ... then export all the content/stems/mixes you want so you can reimport to another DAW. If you try that and...

Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave

Please provide links to articles pointing out possible issues so it helps folks. I am
Not aware of any single drive issues with those cards, but that does not mean they don’t exist.

Fast cloning...

Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave

Yes, and be super-fast, but remember there is likely no performance reason to *need* to do that, these are so fast you can put everything on one drive if it will fit.... if it does not then sure grab...

Re: Beyond Annoyed

Give up on cloud storage, it is all flakey as hell. Why anybody would risk their work on this is beyond me, given all the problems being repeated with so many users, including using space just like...

Re: HELP - Migrating PT12

Start a (no cost) product registration support case on Avid’s Support website. And you hopefully have some idea of what and when the upgrade you purchased was... and it was from Avid or a dealer....

Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave

It is not partitioning (a drive) it is two separate drives... just use them that way. The way they can appear as a single drive is with software RAID, the card does nothing but give you two very fast...

Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave

Good question, the reason for that slowdown in performance on smaller drives is usually just the lack of flash nvram fan-out from the controller, the smaller capacity drives just have less data paths...

Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave

That's not partitioning in the classic sense.... It's a smart move if you want to simultaneously use both M.2 drives you will get up to twice the IO performance.

Re: new PC: will PT performance jump?

I don't really care that you were asking about new hardware. I already pointed out that nobody here can possibly answer your "simple question" in any meaningful way.

If you are having problems,...

Re: PT 2019.6 crashes every time while loading VocALign Project 3

:-) It's one of those plugins that seems to often drift "out of phase" with Pro Tools.

Re: PT 2019.6 crashes every time while loading VocALign Project 3

What exact version of the plugin are you trying to use?

Update to the latest VocALign Project plugin (or whatever they claim is compatible with your version of Pro Tools). Trash prefs. Try again....

Re: new PC: will PT performance jump?

Why are you asking us for reassurances? Nobody here has any real idea what is causing your problems. *You* need to do a lot more work.

But... given how broken Pro tools 11/12 etc where.... If you...

Re: ProTools on SSD Drive, PT files and instruments on 2nd (non SSD) drive?

Please let other folks here know how you go. Again I want to warn, that I no longer have a Mac Pro and am not doing this myself. (wish I had one now).

Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave

A Samsung 970 Evo draws ~6W-10W max. @ 3.3 V and usually a lot lower than that. So y'all got heaps of power to drive that.

Thermal throttling, you want to pay attention to. These are not drives...

Re: ProTools on SSD Drive, PT files and instruments on 2nd (non SSD) drive?

No two are not necessary. Install one and it will use a PCIe 2 x 8 lane slot in a Mac Pro and give you a PCIe 3 x 4 lane at the M.2 adapter.

Sorry I cut and pasted the abbreviated links from...

Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave

Yes but my point was if you want performance in a Mac Pro Cheesegrater classic look for a switched adapter card that does the PCIe 2 to PCIe3 lane aggregation. I don't think that Sonnet card does...

Re: ProTools on SSD Drive, PT files and instruments on 2nd (non SSD) drive?

Stop looking at SATA drives. Get NVMe drives. Remove what is taking up PCIe slots now and install them there. Start with understanding the difference between SATA and PCIe/NVMe drives. Or wait until...

Re: ProTools on SSD Drive, PT files and instruments on 2nd (non SSD) drive?

"Looking at SSD" tells us nothing that useful. What *exact* model SSD? SATA or NVMe makes a huge difference.

SATA drives in the internal bays only run at Slow SATA II (e.g. 3G not 6G speeds).
