"in the red" in digital is not good! Just get to below 0. You can process after you record with plug-ins if you want a really hot "stepped on" sound.

Go with the powerbook and an external drive. Using Reason and Live you can get away with the internal drive (depending on the song) but for better performance in PT go external. You could try...

If you want a Digi mixer, get the OO2. If you want a Digi I/O box and a third party mixer (CMLABS or others) then get the 002 R.

We use Millennia Medias M2b and Origin STT-1. We added vintage tubes (Telefunken) to the M2b and are very happy with it.
