Re: New Mac Pro (7.1)

Think of the Belkin cable as an adapter/extension cable for the Avid one that comes with the HDX card. I didn’t need it with my 7.1 Mac Pro, one of the Avid HDX cables worked fine.

Yes all TB ports go to Pool B. See page 11 here:

Useful info here too:...

Re: New Mac Pro (7.1)

I can only speak for one HDX card in either slot 5 or 6 (I’ve had it in both) but that cable will definitely work in that scenario l. Not sure about 3 cards but I’m pretty sure you’ll be fine if the...

Re: New Mac Pro (7.1)

It's the bottom right one (the bottom left is the same no?) and that is good for three HDX cards providing they're adjacent to each other. They'd need to be anyway for the little red cable to be...

Re: New Mac Pro (7.1)

Read and write speeds consistently over 8000MB/s with four drives in a RAID 0 configuration according to Blackmagic Speed Test.

Individual m.2 stickers measure over 3000MB/s read and write.

Re: New Mac Pro (7.1)

Yes it’s confusing!

I have my HDX1 card in slot 6 because it’s x8 lane. No point in wasting x16 slot on a x4 HDX card. It’s also right in the path of the centre fan and I’ve sped that up with an...

Re: New Mac Pro (7.1)

I’m with Lucien, the W5700X is well worth the money providing you can spare the PCIe slot.

You might want to look at the Sonnet m.2 card

Re: New Mac Pro (7.1)

Pretty sure it wouldn’t work with the Pegasus. The Sabrent hub can be rotated but it’s blocked by either the the CPU or the the Apple I/O PCIe card in two directions. The other ways round either the...

Yes there is!

I’ve been using one of these.

Re: New Mac Pro (7.1)

Is it System Integrity Protection that needs to be turned off to allow booting from external volumes?

I ask because I think I turned it off without using Terminal after booting with Command+R....

Re: New Mac Pro (7.1)

Weird. You’ve installed the HD Driver?

Clutching at straws here but I’m wondering if the HDX card is getting enough power from the PCIe slot to register in Expansion Slot Utility but not enough...

Re: New Mac Pro (7.1)

No luck with Digitest either? Just FYI my HDX1 is in slot 6. Didn’t want to waste a x16 slot with a x4 card.

What does it look like in Apple menu  > About This Mac, then click the PCI Cards tab?...

Re: New Mac Pro (7.1)

Worked first time here. Is it definitely getting power and showing up in System Information under PCIe slots?

Re: New Mac Pro (7.1)

Avis has revised the slot configuration for 7.1 Mac Pros. Makes more sense now.

Re: New Mac Pro (7.1)

For reference.

Both these PCIe adapter cards are working great in the 7.1 nMP for single NVME’s.

Re: New Mac Pro (7.1)

Thanks Daryl.
I was using 6x SSDs arranged as RAID 0 pairs for Kontakt before the new Mac Pro. Each pair ran at 730MB/s. I had my libraries distributed across the three drives so the load was...

Re: New Mac Pro (7.1)

My thinking is streaming samples from four drives concurrently will be faster -
4x 3000MB/s vs 1 x 8000MB/s. Although most of my sample libraries are Kontakt some are not and work better streaming...

Re: New Mac Pro (7.1)

I went with the Sonnet m.2 4x4 in the end. Apparently you can use the Highpoint card without a driver but lose control over the fans which is quite loud it seems. What swung the Sonnet for me is that...

Re: New Mac Pro (7.1)

Yeah the Samsung drives have gone up on price but it’s very volatile. I have at least two weeks before my 16 core new MP arrives so I’ll hang fire.

I am inclined to go with Samsung Evo Plus m.2...

Re: New Mac Pro (7.1)

Thanks Luke and Lucien.

I’m a composer so the RAM will get filled with sample libraries. It’s not so much how much I need but how much I can afford! 384GB of Nemrix RAM is not that much more...

Re: New Mac Pro (7.1)

Has anyone tried Nemix RAM? Normally RAM is not something I’d skimp on but it’s hard to find anything negative said about this brand.

192GB (6x 32GB) for not far off half the price of OWC. ...

Re: New Mac Pro (7.1)

Indeed. If you have anything other than the base AMD Radeon Pro 580X then slot 2 for HDX1 would be blocked by a double wide graphics card in slot 1!
