Also, it would be great to know if there is an upgrade path from the current HD I/O series or even a crossgrade option from other interfaces.

Dante is definitely out. The do say that MADI hasn't made it too, but I've seen some early quotes that they seem to be included. I would be very surprised if the "Base" model does not include the I/O...

Is this possible? Each DigiLink port supposed to be able to "carry" 32 channels, 64 if both the primary and the secondary connectors are patched to the card.
