nothing jerky about that. a broadcast limiter such as a CBS audimax will turn up the quiet stuff but not a compressor. that's something i've heard kids on work experience from audio school say year...

if it has to stay on one track, grab the free bomb factory bundle. insert the BF76 and toy with it until it sounds cool. you may have to automate it's in and out parameters to cater for the different...

with regard to crosstalk, are you using a console or is everything plugged directly into the 001?

if you are using a console, i'd suggest it could possibly be a wiring/patching fault or a fault...
