Tried some automation with Console 1. Did some hi & Lo pass filter sweeps and some threshold moves on the comp. No issues regarding crackling on playback.

I have been using a 002 console with Protools on a Mac since PT 11 with no issues. It still works fine with 12.7. Avid does not test and support the interface but it does work.
