Just discovered this bug. Thanks for pointing out the fix. AVID seems to take 2 steps forward and one step back every time there's an update.

You can automate using elastic time if you put your track in Varispeed mode and then automate tempo changes. You draw your tempo changes in with the pencil tool. Unfortunately it affects all tracks...

You could also try the Frontier Design Alpha Track if you have a limited budget or space on the desk. Or a Mackie HUI.

Analog is more reliable? Nothing is more predictable than a digital system, a digital EQ, a digital reverb.

With ones and zeros, there is no grey area. Tape compression, deterioration, burnt out...
