Hi Chris, thanks for your response.

To be clear, when i nudge a fade on a clip using the keyboard commands it moves the level automation breakpoints with it, but when i manually move a clip fade...

When i use the grabber tool to pull out a fade, or adjust the position of a crossfade the automation doesn't follow as normal. The same happens when i use the smart tool to create a new fade....
