You've probably checked this before, but whenever I playback what I've recorded and it only comes out of one speaker, I've forgotten to press the "mono" button on the MBox.

I've seen this happen when the RAM goes bad. Try swapping the RAM just as a test. Be sure to ground yourself to the chasis first of course to prevent static discharge. Cause you never know...

The one I have has a short SP, an LP2 and an LP4. I thought if I left it at SP (short play) record there wouldn't be much lossy-ness to it. I guess I thought I'd be able to use it as an abient mic...

2 words man, "ground lift". All you need is a 3 prong to 2 prong adapter and the noise will be gone. I use this method knowing full well that my laptop is not grounded. I plug it into a powerbar...

mute the track being recorded and turn the mix knob left so that you here your actual singing as loud as you need it.
