I tried plugging the 003 directly into my MacBook Pro, still no dice (1394 light still out).

One last thing to do is try swapping the firewire cable, but I think I have to use the Digi-supplied...

No hot-swapping, and nothing else (at all) on the firewire bus. Very, very strange, as it's been rock solid and in semi-daily use for over a year now (unit purchased in November 2008).
