If you just want to adjust panning of every channel in the 5.0 field, you van create a dedicated 5.1/5.0 bus path with all its sub-paths, then...

Sorry but I can't see how you could do Cube (for example) within Pro Tools / ICON, even with the Auro plugin. Can you clarify ? Do you mean using Auro 9.0 and muting the C "low" channel ? Wouldn't...

I'm sure your Q-Sys system is great for Auro-3d, and that you have all the tools you need in the DAW (Pro Tools only actually) for this specific "format". But this was not the point here, was it ?

You should have a look to Cockos Reaper and its Reasurround panner :

IMHO, the best way is to go HE-AAC (mpeg 4), it's perfectly recognized by QT and Vlc even when streamed from a website (the listener of course needs to have a surround capable audio output...

I would recommend TwistedWave which has a great batch conversion mode, and that is the only audio tool i know that keeps every metadatas in place (also foreign or proprietary ones)....

The only workaround i know of is to use splitted files proprely postfixed with .L/.R/etc. or to reorder the channels with another tool before import (i do this with TwistedWave). It would be great...

After some further testings, you're absolutely right Frank, even Pro Tools 8 considers the interleaved imported audio is at the Film standard channel layout, resulting in wrong channel assignments......

By the way, IMHO .1 could be really usefull depending on the sound, say a thunder storm, or a vehicle interior, a gunshot/explosion, or a train pass-by, etc. etc.
Sure it's useless for a forest...
