I am using the onboard firewire port on the Asus motherboard and I it is compatible. As long as it is standard IEEE 1394 firewire it should work.

I don't know about 8, but I know 7 has been very stable for me.

Keep in mind that only 11 allows you to use more the 4 GB ram, because it is not pure 64-bit, but 11 is, and will use all the ram...

Just a note - it is my understanding that even PT10 is only 32-bit and therefore cannot address more than 4 GB of ram anyway. You might be better off just taking the two extra stocks out.
