I've had a look at keyboard maestro and i've got 'auto preview' and 'write auto to selection' setup. Seems to work really well.

Thanks for the quick reply but I was hoping for a simpler method.
There are tracks I would never want to automate, such as layback tracks and auxes to limit stem tracks. It would be great...

I understand I can turn 'off' automation on a per channel basis but I'd like to 'option' click the whole session into touch but disable specific channels.
I could group all the 'active' tracks...
