Re: How to determine correct level of Wave form?

Setting levels on program material is always a guess. The difference between analog and digital is that with digital, it is far better to error on the low side rather than the high side.

Re: I have a Pro Tools problem and was unable to get proper phone support

The last I knew a few years ago, PT First could only do projects.

Re: TPDF vs. POW-r Dithering

The real-world test is what sounds best after being converted with a lossy encoding codec or adjusted with today's digital volume controls. Almost nobody outside a studio is ever going to hear our...

Re: Who invented the dynamic EQ

The Ortofon high-frequency limiter in the mid-'60s was the first I ever heard of. It was quickly followed by a Neumann.

Re: Waves V11 - Left Field Update

You can almost always get a discount on both Waves and Avid from dealers.

Re: Catalina

To their credit, Avid has always taken a far more conservative approach to claims of OS and computer compatibility than other developers. That doesn't mean it won't work, just that you could be...

Re: ISRC question - previously released material

It is actually supposed to be tied to the mix no matter what label re-releases it or if it is remastered. That way royalties are kept straight.

Re: ISRC question - previously released material

Yes as long as it isn't a different mix.

Re: Intel Core i5 vs. i7

I understand the difference is that i5 doesn't have hyperthreading.

Re: Catalina update for Pro-Tools?

The market for the new Mac Pro is video, a market they almost completely lost thanks to the trashcan and FCX. Shipping it with only Catalina would be a colossal mistake because it would be...

Re: Mix print level???

Just print to 32-bit float files and it probably can't clip.

There is one very good reason to print to moderate levels. You don't ever want your monitor D to A's headroom limitations influencing...

Re: Low Latency Monitoring question

The problem is that comb filtering can affect a performance long before it becomes noticable to the listener. Only good if you are charging by the hour...

Re: Are we not due an update??!!

I don't think the right answer is more frequent but buggier releases. I've been utterly shocked by the bugfix lists in recent updates of other DAWs. Unfortunately, today's operating systems are a...

Re: Sonnox plugins?

They are still among the very best sounding, i.e. don't screw as much up, plug-ins out there. Another real sleeper is the Waves Q-10 which was the very first third-party plug ever.

Only the very...

Re: Good Studio Sub Woofer

The problem is that low frequencies are still directional in spite of the '50s era marketing nonsense claiming that they are not. If you ever get a chance to compare calibrated full-range speakers to...

Re: Good Studio Sub Woofer

None unless you are mixing low frequency effects for a film. A pair ranks behind that for extending monitors having a limited lf response. Single subs don't translate very well. They are fine for fun...

Re: Patch bay problems

It appears that you want to use that 1176 in a Pro Tools insert. Is that correct?

I would advise recording the bass without the SansAmp or 1176 with the player listening to a studio monitor. That...

Re: Favorite Saturation Plugins - Does Anything Touch Decapiator

Re: Different loudness readings with different meters

There is no "precisely correct" meter because of the wide variation in program material and looseness in the R-128 spec. It's a wide world of "sort of." For that reason, it's a bad idea to really...

Re: ProTools price adjustments from July 1st.

No but Samplitude is the equivalent of Vanilla. Sequoia, the equivalent of Ultimate is even more expensive than Ultimate.

Re: To HEAT or not to HEAT?

HEAT sounds appropriately subtle when you drop the level of each track down to -20dBFS=0VU or lower with clip-gain and then mix with it on. It doesn't sound good when hitting it any higher than that...

Re: ProTools price adjustments from July 1st.

How is this any different from when PT 12.? came out including the very same prices? I remember all of the same posturing and complaints. Later, they separated vanilla updates and support allowing...
