Re: USB Firewire Faster than Firewire??

Firewire is way superior to USB for a reason that has nothing to do with bandwidth... it's in the protocol. Firewire is "isochronous" - a device can reserve bandwidth for its stream. USB ain't got it...

Re: Digi002 Firewire and DV Camera or Camcorder

They must mean at the same time. Firewire has a key advantage USB does not - it is "isochronous" - this means that a device can reserve bandwidth for itself on the bus, on a first-come, first-served...

Re: Active monitors - your opinion...

I use a pair of Yamaha MSP5s. My space is quite limited and at the low levels I monitor (and the other priorities in my budget which turned me away from Genelecs), I am satisfied with them.

I...

Re: PC - Mac compatability via drives

this extension didn't ring a bell... that's normal, since I am running French Mac-OS v9.2.2. This extension (same rev) is called "Traducteur CD"... my understanding was that this was a CD-media only...

Re: PC - Mac compatability via drives

I'll fish out one of my HFS+ drives and pop it into my old PC with MacOpener, I am curious to test their compatability claim.

As for popping a PC-formatted drive into a Mac (or connecting via...

Re: DV VIDEO

It's true that some DV camcorders have analog passthrough - you connect composite or S-Video to the camcorder which converts into a DV stream on the fly which goes right into the mac over firewire. I...

Re: PC - Mac compatability via drives

I purchased MacOpener and highly recommend it - I read Mac-formatted CDs and write Mac-formatted floppies and Zip disks transparently.

It is true that DataViz says MacOpener can mount a Mac HFS+...

Re: OT-Shouldn\'t There Be Just One Speaker?

Ideally, it's not one, or even two, or 5.1 speakers that are necessary... it's more like... TWENTY-FOUR.

Surround yourself with twenty-four speakers... each playing a track. Bring a speaker...

Re: are there any quality (handheld) recorders?

Minidisc is your best bet for low-cost field recording - ATRAC compression native to MiniDisc is not too evil - just make sure you have a decent mic or mics up front.

Consumer DATs work great but...

Re: syncing Sony VX2000 digital video camera w/001?

I agree, I think it would be simplest to record sound into the camera - at capture time your video is locked to your audio, simplifying edits.

As far as I know the audio portion of a DV stream is...

Re: Bouncing PTLE sessions to .wav file help!

We are talking about two different types of CD here.

If you burn an Audio CD ("Red Book"), your files are converted into a mono or stereo stream, indexed by tracks/minutes/seconds. Digitally, they...

Re: Is the digi mp3 option good?

The MP3 algorithm was developed by researchers at Germany's Fraunhofer Institute.

These days nobody feels that programmers should be paid for their work. Hey, why pay musicians for that matter?

Re: Bouncing PTLE sessions to .wav file help!

hmmm what I'm confused about is why you would want to burn an audio CD for sharing files - that's what iTunes does, right? If you do that, then you need to rip stereo files from the Red Book audio.

Re: Emailing mp3s???

MP3 is already compressed... if lower bitrate still creates too large a file maybe you should consider encoding with a higher-compression codec like RealMedia or the QDesign Muscic codec
