Not a fan of IBM, had 4 fail, and all the others are very noisy.

Got a Seagate Barracuder IV which is really quiet. Would reccomend them.

You have the joy of dealing with your authorisations (unless you got an iLok) if you start fomatting things I think, i wouldnt risk just leaving them on. I one lost one of my SDII auths ages ago...

Cant you just take word clock and MTC from the PT rig and set Logic to external/free in the Sync prefs?

Or, if youre syncing to tape, get a USD, use it in standalone mode to resove a wordclock...

the Focusrite ISA430 (ProducerPack) has de-ess, compressor, expander/gate and 4 band EQ. You can fit it with a 24/96 AD card.

If you want a clean, quiet pre, definitely worth considering.
