Re: how to avoid clipping on post fader bus sends?
Jacek, please reread my post about levels. Your signal has noise in it that is above the noise int he system. This is what you're missing. The dynamic range wont change if you trim 12db.

Right Wild Honey. if he thinks reducing the volume affects his dynamic range, then he didn't read my long post about levels very carefully.

Re: how to avoid clipping on post fader bus sends?
We have all explained this to you over and over. When you use the tool the way it is supposed to be used there is 18db of headroom in the send. Observe 0dbVU
Also, you ask how there can be...

Re: how to avoid clipping on post fader bus sends?
But when Michael Brauer does wrong things in the analog world, it works. Here in digi land, working 16db lower wont change a thing except your complaint. That's why its a good answer to your...

Re: how to avoid clipping on post fader bus sends?
Well said, Ainslie. As professionals, we shouldn't be complaining up the chain about the audio levels we receive. Maybe if something is horribly distorted, or has dropouts, we might ask if there is...

Re: how to avoid clipping on post fader bus sends?
I wrote this a while ago in a different thread, but I think it's worth re-pasting here. Recording lower is the way to go, you lose nothing, and you "gain" a lot.

Re: Best sample rate to record at?
I still don't think anyone has correctly identified in any meaningful way any difference between 44.1 kHz and higher rates in double blind tests with good converters.
Also, do most converters even...

Re: Sending Inserts To AUX's
Right. This is one of the reasons there are pre-fader sends. The old "dry signal fades out while the reverb stays" thing. Or for reverb only tracks too.
Another good application is building...

Re: Best Recording Levels
Thank you Bob, of course you are right.
Dither is added before the word truncation, not afterwards. Masking would be an effect of noise afterwards.
Still I think (hope?) I was right about...

Re: Limiter on master bus useless?
Hmm. I'm surprised that no one has said a few things here yet.
First off, the Pro Tools mixer isn't like an analog mixer. In an analog mixer, if you're overdriving the master fader, you need to...

Well, Murt, this discussion certainly goes across lines. It's true for any 24 bit digital recording device with at least mediocre converters.

Hey Spicemix,
I think the point here isn't about what the converter can handle, but about what you need to do to your analog front end to get higher levels. it's also a matter of headroom in the...

The main point of contention here is whether Quantization error is masked by noise. I say yes, and mightyduck says no. I say yes becasue that's what dither does.
Further we can quantify the level...

Please explain the application of dither then. Isn't is noise precisely meant to mask quantization error? Further, we can say that the Quanitzation error is half the size of the quanta, so we know...
