I thrashed around a bit more and got it to work. I had made some wrong assumptions; the gear was also a tad stubborn. Here are all the details for others who may follow my path.

I have an 002, a Tascam DA-88, and the IF-TAD converter which gives the DA-88 ADAT I/O.

If I plug optical out from the IF-TAD to optical in on the 002, and set the 002 to sync externally to it...

Please help me in my time of need... <g>

Short version: v4.1 ProTools Project projects, when opened in v5.0 Digi001, only play back 8 tracks at a time. v5.0 Demo projects play back all tracks...
