I've found that for crunchy guitars, set the amp for less gain (distortion) than you would playing live, then compress it in the mix.

I'd be more daring with my high-pass filters than the others...

If you buy two Audio-Technica 4033s, you have a killer vocal mic, plus some really nice stereo...

I've heard more than one engineer say that the Avalon 737 is god's gift to bass tracking. A TDM buddy of mine uses his all the time and loves it.

Dig an ATM25 (NOT the "PRO" version) on floor tom.

And 421s are classics for a reason. They make a good kick mic, and are also sweet on a guitar cab if you need something other than a 57.

I hate recording Taylors. They don't have any bass (modern ones, that is - the old ones that he built by himself in the late 1970s are great). Gibson J-45s are the way to go, or at least something...

First off, have a good studio-ready kit that's tuned and sounds good. It might help to have the bearing edges recut if they need it. I just did this with my old Slingerland kit, and now they sound...
