Unfortunately, I think that the software is hard coded to look in the $USERS/Library/Preferences folder ($USERS is the variable that is written for the currently logged in user). ...

The first thing I would do is to check your logs to see why your machine is having Kernel Panics...

When OS X has a Kernel Panic, if possible, it writes the issue to a log file in...
