well, if you're willing to temporarily switch platforms, you could get a refurb MacBook Pro & install Boot Camp & WinXP to run PT. Then when PT is released for OSX on Intel, you won't need to upgrade...

incidentally, there exists a hack to let 3G iPods record & playback at 24/96k, it's not supported by Apple, but I've used it and it works.

rosemiester - the noise may be a grounding issue - I've had the same thing - there's something called a 'Hum Eliminator' that might help, but you'll have to do a search for it

that's just it - the only thing on the 5400rpm drive would be the os & protools.

7200rpm drives & processors would both be from the remote machines.
