Yes , you are correct apple was Intel's proving ground that it could be done.
They very much was instrumental in the software driver development.

Apple did not develop thunderbolt
Its always been Intel's Technology.
They only had an agreement that kept windows and other platforms from using it also until here recently.

there was a disk in the optical drive wow.
