I think I'm going to go with the UD3. It's a hundred and twenty dollars cheaper and seems to have everything I'll need. The UD5 seems great but I can't see why I would need the extra features....

Just a little update- using an external USB drive I got 110 dverbs- not as much as I expected, but really the true measure will be using firewire.

Also, I've not had any issues with my laptop's...

I ended up buying a 15.6" MSI A6200 from Office Depot. It has an i5, 4gb of ram and it's a pretty sweet deal at $599. Can't test it with Pro Tools yet, though, as I've got 7.4 and this is running...

Well, the comparable MacBook is more expensive (by $150!), not sure if it has a lesser processor, half the RAM, a smaller hard drive, and a smaller screen.

I did exactly what you want to do. I just disconnected all my drives, installed XP onto the target drive, and then re-connected. When you boot up, it asks which one I'd like to run. Easy!
