Re: Upgrading a Mac Pro 5.1 12core 2.4Ghz

I’ve reset multiple Mac PRAM/NVRAMs that have totally dead GPUs and no video. In old Pros and more the MacBook Pro 17 with NVIDIA GPU failure (the one that was supposedly the reason Jobs kicked...

Re: How to install samples on external drive

Yes more info would help.

But EZ Drummer Version 2 and above let you move samples to other locations easily.

Toontracks is near the top of my list for vendors actually making stuff easy to...

Re: Upgrading a Mac Pro 5.1 12core 2.4Ghz

No I meant I would keep upgrading the old Mac Pro as much as I could.

If it was business use and I could afford a new Mac Pro, and be willing to replace in in ~2-3 years and really needed the...

Re: Upgrading a Mac Pro 5.1 12core 2.4Ghz

You can reset the PRAM/NVRAM with any GPU, just do it blind, it does not rely on the GPU at all.

Personally I would get my GPU flashed so it worked with POST, especially if making a bunch of other...

Re: Recommended SSD drives for sessions?

Dave not sure what problems you had with the QVO exactly but I also would just not recommend them. The quad level NAND was maybe supposed to drive larger drives to lower price points vs three level...

Re: How to install samples on external drive

Why are you doing this? What exact problem are you trying to solve?

You will likely make more progress with Pro Tools as a beginner if you clearly describe the problems and ask for suggestions and...

Re: i9 10900K build... a little disappointing.

Effects like this with low number cores are almost certainly due to hardware interrupt processing. So yes “Windows stuff”. The reported “system interrupts” usage on a core may not give a full clue...

Re: How to upgrade license from 2015 student license

You might want to read the license agreement carefully. I doubt Avid granted you a license for all future upgrades and no Avid license I am aware of talks about 'for life'.

Are you talking...

Re: HDX delay compensation strategies

(all good advice from DetroitT... but to split hairs a bit....) It is worth being aware of the issue with lack of side chain delay compensation on native... which can lead to audible differences. A...

Re: Recommended SSD drives for sessions?

Since you seemed to have missed the SSD boat... I will start with the basics. The best location to run your session from is likely the internal super-fast NVMe/PCIe SSD inside your Mac mini. There is...

Re: Recommended SSD drives for sessions?

G-Tech has been owned by Western Digital since 2012 and before that was owned by Hitachi. So they do and have made the drives used internally, including likely their SSD products, but who knows what...

Re: Upgraded to HDX from HD3-Issues

I don’t know how you can do confidently state that. This issue has always been very dependent on the exact plugins and workload. If people find disabling hyper threading helps with their plugin and...

Re: Pro Tools 2020 Virtual Instrument/Midi Timing

Nice work around. I wonder if that is related to past ADC/send problems that folks have reported for years. Dave (Albee1952) has mentioned it multiple times in the past. e.g....

Re: Pro Tools 2020.9.1 won't load plugins on startup

I would be surprised... plugins get initially loaded before the playback engine is initialized. But you can test by holding down the 'N' key and selecting Built In Output as the playback engine.

Re: Pro Tools 2020 Virtual Instrument/Midi Timing

For the OP's problem, can you reproduce this in a simple test session with no other plugins in use? What happens when you open that using built in output as the playback engine (to remove any...

Re: Will Pro Tools 2020 run on Mac Mini 6,2

It's never really a question about hardware... you have the minimum RAM recommended by Avid, and it running OK with 2019.x should run OK with 2020.9 from a CPU and memory viewpoint. But this is...

Re: SPINNER vs SSD for D drive

If you only want to add one more M.2 drive almost any cheap card will do. I'd probalby go with https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-PEX4M2E1-M-2-Adapter-Profile/dp/B01FU9JS94.

If you want to have...

Re: SPINNER vs SSD for D drive

And I've spent something like a decade on DUC pointing out that many of those posts you are talking about offering reasons not to use SSDs were not correct.

Re: Fbc 360?

Facebook 360 audio crapware. Just delete it.

... but it may not be that plugin having issues... it may be the next plugin Pro Tools is trying to load and has not written to the splash screen yet....

Re: SPINNER vs SSD for D drive

Why do you think a mechanical HDD is more reliable than your boot drive?

The number one thing to worry about with data/session protection is your backup/archive strategy.

“Consensus”? Lots of...

If you are using the MTRX Studio via Dante you do not have a "HD Native" systems,...

Re: SPINNER vs SSD for D drive

I'm not sure who the "we" is here. SSD technology is years beyond where SSDs made more sense for audio drives than HDD. And with NVMe/PCIe SSDs we are also years beyond where it is necessary to...
