Ironically, I just now found a solution.

Made another user account (administrator) as per Avid's Troubleshooting guide's last resort.
Logged in there and started...

All right, this will hopefully be the final word.

Since 9.0.5 is a nightmare with MIDI, I upgraded to 9.0.6 today.
And it works!

Now I can get back to my evil plot of taking over the world.. ;)

Just checking in to inform you that my setup is finally running rock solid, at least for now.
It seems the BIOS upgrade did the trick.

There is no right or wrong way to mix, so do what fits you the best.

That said, grouping tracks and mixing in stems can be a really effective and good sounding way to do stuff.
