Many thanks to The Weed and zedhed! The problem is now resolved.

The steps taken were:


Run PT uninstaller from the original media
Reboot
Run CCleaner
Reboot
Install 8.0.4 from...

Actually, at first I did try to run 8.0.5 while 8.0.4 was installed. I got a message indicating that I needed to uninstall 8.0.4.

I don't think I can install 8.0.3 on a 64-bit Win7 system, can I?...
