I envy your experience as in all my years of using Pro Tools, I never saw that behavior. In my experience, it always dragged in locating files. So I have always pointed it to the proper folder first...

1024x768 is a 4:3 ratio. I always use matched displays on my dual display setups and I always set them to use their native resolution.
