I think that may be Biblical. Something about not letting the "right hand know what the left hand is doing..." (Matthew 6:3 - a bit paraphrased...:D)

Odd time signatures are not as scarce as some think. The Mission Impossible theme is 5/4 for example.

There's any number of pop songs in 6/8, which isn't odd, but definitely not in the 4/4...
