Re: Real CPU Usage vs. Pro Tools System Usage Window

Wow, didn't expect to see this thread again! Well, all I can do is provide the information I've learned in the meantime. Yours to read if you want to, I tend to be quite wordy.

To give you the...

Re: Can anyone school me on ASIO drivers?

Woops, that's for Cubase. Correct, in Pro Tools I run 44.1 at 1024, or 88.2 at 2048.

Re: Can anyone school me on ASIO drivers?

Thank you for your reply. This portion is especially helpful. I know there's a lot in that thread, but I do mention both buffer and sample rate changes, and my 003 rack is my only firewire device...

Can anyone school me on ASIO drivers?

Hello everyone,

Is there anyone here who has a deep understanding of ASIO drivers that wouldn't mind taking some time to work with me on a problem I'm having?

For the TLDR version, I've been...

Re: Looking for advice on a new system for large virtual instrument sessions

Thank you both for all of your involvement. You've both been extremely helpful and I actually have everything resolved now. I moved my mastering chain to a slave machine using VEP and the overhead on...

Re: Looking for advice on a new system for large virtual instrument sessiion

Hmm, alright that's fair enough. I think I'll try using my mastering plugins on the slave machine and working inside of Pro Tools exclusively to start. That should take care of a ton of overhead...

Re: Looking for advice on a new system for large virtual instrument sessiion

I did try DP a while ago and unfortunately it wasn't my thing. I've actually gone through most of the major DAWs at some point, testing notation along the way. Cubase was the closest, but their...

Re: Looking for advice on a new system for large virtual instrument sessions

Thank you so much for your input.

Really the only true requirements of the above are a low buffer and the potential to run 32+ VI tracks. I play nothing live, but the reason I want to run the...

Re: Looking for advice on a new system for large virtual instrument sessions

Thank you so much for your reply. :-)

With all of this in mind, I'm wanting to put together a new machine that could run all of these plugins, whether they are known CPU hogs or not with the...

Looking for advice on a new system for large virtual instrument sessions

Hey everyone,

First of all, I know these posts suck, so thank you to anyone who reads through it. I'm looking to get some direction in a new system. Generally I feel like I'm on top of this stuff...

Re: Real CPU Usage vs. Pro Tools System Usage Window

A one man show still needs an exit right?

The project went smoothly all the way through the end. Grew to 35 instrument tracks (mostly heavy synths) all running through VEP instances. At its...

Re: Real CPU Usage vs. Pro Tools System Usage Window

One man show here. But FINALLY some results.

VEP works like a dream, but for different reasons than expected. I tried one instance of VEP per instrument, and one instance with all instruments...

Re: Real CPU Usage vs. Pro Tools System Usage Window

Thank you for anyone still following along. So I guess we arrive here:

What determines the capacity for realtime processing? It's clearly not CPU bound as I've never hit more than 55% ever and...

Re: Real CPU Usage vs. Pro Tools System Usage Window

I appreciate the offer Barry but looks like my problem lies elsewhere.

Installed Cubase today and copied over the project exactly. Guess what? Same results! About the same idle at 30%, and besides...

Re: Real CPU Usage vs. Pro Tools System Usage Window

Just wanted to update with where I'm at. Since I'm going for Cross-DAW testing I decided to go with a clean install. I'm still waiting on the licencing key for the new DAW to arrive, so I jumped back...

Re: Can someone explain to be the argument behind Pro Tools being bad with midi?

Having experience in two old versions, 7 and 8, and two new versions 10 and 11, I can point to two things.

1. Virtual Instrument handling. Not strictly MIDI, but if you're working in MIDI then...

Re: Real CPU Usage vs. Pro Tools System Usage Window

Ran into this: http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=379714

So it appears the system usage meter also takes audio driver load into account which is a whole different can of worms and now it seems...

Re: Real CPU Usage vs. Pro Tools System Usage Window

Yep, just said that I tried that. It was actually worse when it was off. Ah well, I guess I'll wait for others to chime in and open a case with Avid.

Thank you for your assistance thus far.

Re: Real CPU Usage vs. Pro Tools System Usage Window

I really appreciate the help so far.

To do as much troubleshooting as I can, I tried swapping interfaces and started playing with the playback engine buffer. The issue actually improved as the...

Re: Real CPU Usage vs. Pro Tools System Usage Window

Opened another recent project with the same results. Pro Tools sits around 50% CPU, OS reports 15-20%. Again, I don't get errors with "ignore errors" unchecked.

Seems to be related to a Serum...

Re: Real CPU Usage vs. Pro Tools System Usage Window

I should also note that Pro Tools reports an idle usage of 25% or so, while any other tool, including task manager, reports around 6%.

I guess the real question is how does Pro Tools calculate CPU...

Sorry, I'll try to be more clear. I've already done the basic troubleshooting just to get that little forum favorite out of the way. ;) Believe me I do know it's important to start there.
