Agreed. The hard drives spin faster and are bigger, the bus is faster- everything's eeked out a bit more. The desktop is not designed to conserve energy; it is a powerhouse. It really is awesome...

Sounds like some testing and checking would be in order. You'll get some different sounds out of different combos.
A general reason for compressing while recording is just to lower your noise...
