But, sorry, microKorg does not have onboard USB output ... USB a part of microKorg XL, but not microKorg.

Seems like MBox MIDI driver is not functioning ...
But! For diagnostic purpose you can plug in microKorg using USB connection and try to monitor incoming messages in MIDI-OX one more time...

Just personally: I am using "MBox2 Pro" only with Pro Tools.
Default input\output of operation system settled to integrated sound card.
Optionally: Any other software (Reaper, Audio Finder .... )...

You can record "Standalone Software Synth" by capturing Core Audio streams (at least on Mac) into DAW (like Reaper). Special software can be used for it like "Jack" (at least on Mac).

BTW: Look on your System Profiler. It should show all connected USB devices. Than it guarantee that they will be visible in "Audio MIDI Setup"....

I am using Korg R3 via standard 5x5 MIDI cables wired to MIDI i\o module. Usage via USB bring some background noise in my setup, but it just personally. USB also working fine.
