Why can't I bounce a stereo acoustic track to a new stereo track thru hardware? Only one side of the track level shows, not both sides of the track level?

In retrospect. What I did differently is the day before working on my session. I wasn't hooked up to my interface I was working off laptop by itself. But I still had external hd plugged into laptop...
