Re: Loudness and room-size was: TV-Mix for Theatre

I guess you are talking about impulse responses made from recorded sweeps? He did a lot of measurements and IR-capturing in most large mixing stages in Berlin and a couple of smaller TV-stages and...

Re: Loudness and room-size was: TV-Mix for Theatre

What do you mean by "sample recordings"? You mean mixes made in these rooms?

Re: Loudness and room-size was: TV-Mix for Theatre

The test of my fried goes like this:

He plays back a piece of auddio in a large dolby/THX-alligned theater @85dB(c). Next door is a small edit-suite 5.1 setup same piece of film. People can walk...

Re: Loudness and room-size was: TV-Mix for Theatre

I moved my gear to a temporary edit-room in Munich for that project. It was an ex-recording room. Very dry acoustics. I guess about 6mx4mx2,50m if I remember correctly.
My room in berlin is about...

Re: Loudness and room-size was: TV-Mix for Theatre

I prepared 5.0, stereo and Quad stems of ambiences (atmos) and the crowds in my edit room. All the individual ADR crowds were pre-panned to a couple of LCR outputs. After finding out that 85dB(c) is...

Re: Loudness and room-size was: TV-Mix for Theatre

The asistanmt editor at our studio is currently finishing his thesis on this very topic. It also includes listening tests etc. I can update you once he´s finished.

Re: Loudness and room-size was: TV-Mix for Theatre

don branko,

the problem with your suggestion is: what is the reference in your model? You suggest voice clips to listen too. But we are talking about the difference that occurrs between a large...

Re: Loudness and room-size was: TV-Mix for Theatre

BTW: I have spoken to a professor at the sound section of the berlin film school and he will try to find some graduating students that still need a topic for their thesis and suggest this very topic...

Re: Loudness and room-size was: TV-Mix for Theatre

Over here trailers can not exceed the LEQ figures. I think 85LEQ for trailers. Wich is still pretty loud, I agree.
But this is kinda off-topic.

Re: Loudness and room-size was: TV-Mix for Theatre

No they don´t re-EQ every time but the dolby-guy does a quick-check of the EQ with his RTA everytime a master is printed to MOD to ID major errors. And since after the mix is before the mix it is as...

Re: Loudness and room-size was: TV-Mix for Theatre

Interesting. Dolby has moved to a rather strickt policy over here with the specs. Monitoring at 7 during the mastering and comments about outrageously loud average levels etc. I guess it´s because...

Re: Loudness and room-size was: TV-Mix for Theatre

Yes, but wouldn´t the SPL-meter you allign both rooms with "hear" the sum of all those early and late reflections the same way in both rooms and therefore would give you an according reading? I think...

Re: Loudness and room-size was: TV-Mix for Theatre

I think you misunderstood. I was saying that a given mix sounds way louder in a small room than in a large room even if they are alligned to the identical dbSPL.

Re: Loudness and room-size was: TV-Mix for Theatre

hm. doesn´t the dolby-consultant re-allign the system every time you master a MOD? At least this is the case here. Before the MOD can be mastered the consultant checks all speaker-levels and the...

Re: Loudness and room-size was: TV-Mix for Theatre

Wich in essence means: You shouldn´t mix in a small room for theatrical release even when it´s callibrated to 85. Luckily Dolby doesn´t licence tiny bedroom studios even when they run at 85spl :-D

Re: Loudness and room-size was: TV-Mix for Theatre

With this in mind wouldn´t it be a bad advice to tell any sound editor to calibrtate to 85SPL? To MHO it makes absolutely no sense to calibrate an average size edit-suite to 85SPL. The track-lay will...

Loudness and room-size was: TV-Mix for Theatre

I thought of starting a new topic instead of hijacking the other.

Speaking of wich there definitely is some connection between roomsize and "felt" loudness. Example: When I listen to a master...
