and make sure that your system is set to use the optical out of your system sounds card... make it 2 channel SPDIF instead of ADAT.

Yep, read page 37 in the manual as mentioned. You want to double-check that the control panel has 'ADAT1-2' has 'monitor assign' turned on. It's easy to miss.
