I tried this workflow of routing out of the DAW to the MOTU to let it do the mixing and send back to the DAW to record the mixed results. In this case the DAW is Motu's Performer...

Thanks everyone for the advice. Am going to rebuild my PC with a TB enabled motherboard and SSD drives and go with a TB enable interface.

I took your advice and tried out Amplitube 5 demo plugins. I found these superior to Guitar Rig, and decided to buy the Axe I/O interface from them with the plugin bundle.
