The weird thing is, it was just a few years ago that Avid lifted the restriction on using ONLY their hardware with Pro Tools. The idea was that you can now use ANY interface made by ANY company......

Yes, Even at 4 GB I am getting CPU spikes. I tried something. And I opened a different session on the same Hdd and it ran fine. All my sessions have between 8-12 tracks and NO plugins running. ...
