I've been through 3 UAD interfaces plus firewire -> thunderbolt so I suspect that journey and legacy of drivers hasn't helped my issue.

Yeah I know Ozone is heavy. I generally only use one instance as a mastering plug. Alloy2 is optimised to be less CPU heavy so you can use it like a channel...
