I got a new MBox and it runs just fine with my old iMac, thanks for your comments (especially Darryl), shame I had such a frustrating introduction to the pro tools...

It turns out the MBox was dead on arrival, I got a replacement from the seller and had the thing up and running in 15 min.

Yes your comments are useful as they reassure me that I have set things up as best I can and I have not missed anything obvious... which might be easy for a "new to pro tools"...

I have performed a downgrade of Lion to Snow Leopard and updated this to 10.6.8. I installed the latest drivers for MBox - Mac Releases v1.0.21 (Aug 17, 2011) and all I get is a almost inaudible but...
