I put in a lot of mutes with the graphical interface on an instrument track. I basically used the mute "line" like a "sustain line" as I had the two confused for a while.

My advice is to can the "cans" and get a Yamaha Motif rack synth and use its drums sounds with a good sequencer. Enter in the basic swing with a keyboard or pad and pencil in, and "repeat" the rest. ...

Dude, if your equipment has MIDI ports on them, just plug them into the back of the rack and set up a track that recieves their outputs. The VU meters will signal if you have good connection. Then...
