I managed to figure out by chance one of the switches had a bit of dirt in it, and hadn't quite gone fully across, blast of air and flick the switch and all is good. Sorry for the panic.

that would be really disappointing if you "need" a powered usb hub,

I've also had the same issue with my ilok using usb port on a powered thunderbolt 2 dock.
