Thanks for the response. Did change that pref to High Quality, but see no perceptible change in image quality as a result.
The file also plays fine in Final Cut.

Thanks, Simon. The NTSC video is the master. Most important to me is that there must be a method in place for deriving PAL picture before I must devise an appropriate audio output.

We use Belkin cards for firewire/usb - but not for recording. I don't think you'll be able to record to a firewire drive using any card- just too much traffic on the PCI buss. We have beige G3...
